10 Delicious Drinks to Help Kick Your Soda Habit

fruit2Are you trying to drink less soda or quit drinking soda entirely? Luckily there are many delicious alternatives!

I’m trying to quit drinking soda and recently completed a three day no soda challenge. I’ve been a long-time soda drinker, but knowing there were other tasty options made it easier to reach for those instead.

Soda has many negative health impacts. This drink is linked to weight gain, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and dental problems along with many other issues.

Here are 10 quick, cheap and easy drink ideas to have instead of soda:

  • Flavored waters: Add slices of fruit, veggies or herbs to a pitcher of water and chill for a refreshing low calorie drink. You can add limes, lemons, oranges, apples, mint, basil, watermelon, cucumber or any of your other favorites to the water.
  • Seltzer or water mixed with juice.This is great because you get a nice sweet, fruity flavor without as much sugar or calories. My favorite juices to mix with water are orange, cranberry, apple and mixed berry juice.
  • Cheapo lemonade: Squeeze a lemon wedge in water and add a packet of stevia
  • Veggie juice such as V8 or homemade using a juicer or blender
  • Vegan milk such as almond, rice, soy or cashew. These often come in different flavors such as unsweetened, vanilla or chocolate.
  • Smoothies: Super easy and quick to make in a blender. Just add some milk, fruit and other mix ins such as greens or protein powder. Blend and enjoy!
  • Coconut water
  • Iced tea, regular or decaf black or green tea.
  • Hot or iced herbal tea such as chamomile, cinnamon, or peppermint
  • Ice water – very refreshing and the least expensive! : )

No soda challenge – last day!

soda4Today is the last day of the no soda challenge. I am happy to say that I was able to complete all three days without drinking any soda hurrah! : )

Hopefully I’ll be able to keep this going, but I’m just grateful I was able to finish the challenge successfully. I’ve been a heavy diet soda drinker for about 15 years so to go three day without one feels really good.

I unfortunately had a binge yesterday which makes it all the more surprising to me that I was able to go three days without soda. Normally in the past when I’ve had an eating episode I always drink soda. This little challenge shows me that with focus and determination change is possible…even if it’s slow. This gives me hope for the future.

No soda challenge day 2

soda3I’m halfway through the no soda challenge! Happily I didn’t drink any soda today. But I was hanging on by my toenails because I really wanted one.

To try and quench my desire for soda I had water mixed with cranberry juice and that seemed to help a little bit probably because of the sweetness and tartness of the cranberries.

I gotta say today was really tough food wise. I pretty much did everything wrong: I didn’t follow my eating plan, I ate at weird times, ate when I wasn’t particularly hungry, etc. Healing can really have its ups and downs sometimes.

I’m going to write an update about it soon, but I’m very grateful that at least I didn’t have any soda despite having a more down day.

Progress not perfection!

No soda challenge day 1

sodaToday is my no soda challenge day 1! And I was able to drink no soda today, including no seltzer water hurrah!!

Seltzer water is my go-to drink when I’m trying to avoid soda but it’s a slippery slope and always leads back to soda. So I’m aiming to have three bubble-free days. Day one accomplished woohoo!

This was definitely a challenging day all around due to life/work stress. On any other day I would have had, oh maybe a 2 liter bottle of anything fizzy and sweet…but amazingly not today. That’s pretty awesome : )

What did I drink today instead? I had plain water mostly but I’ve also been reading about green drinks and they seem pretty neat so I decided to make one for breakfast. The one I made is basically just frozen fruit, coconut water, greens (from Trader Joe’s) and water mixed in a blender. It was pretty easy to make and healthy also, which I love. I have a mini blender which works great, it’s nothing fancy it was only about $16.

Blueberry Green Drink

Serves 1

1 cup mixed greens

4-8 ounces coconut water

1/3-1/2 banana

1/3 cup blueberries

Water, as needed

In the blender add the coconut water (if using only 4 ounces, add 4 ounces water also). Add the greens and blend until moderately blended. Add the fruit and blend until you have the desired consistency.

Note: Blender drinks are not an exact science, they are more fun and creative. If you like a sweeter drink add more fruit, or if you prefer them not so sweet don’t add much fruit at all and more greens.

No soda challenge

sodaFor the next 3 days I’m doing a health improving challenge: drink no soda!

Starting tomorrow the challenge begins and goes from October 7-October 9.

I have a couple of my own reasons why I want to break my soda habit (particularly diet soda):

  • I am simply way too dependent on it. I turn to it to ease my anxiety, stress, boredom, etc and I know it’s just not a healthy way to deal with emotions. I have been drinking excessive diet soda for at least 15 years.
  • It makes me feel awful…yet I keep drinking it, which is really not good. I think I might be very sensitive or allergic to artificial sugars (even natural ones like stevia)
  • Also regular soda, which I drink sometimes, has excessive sugar which can lead to many health problems
  • It’s a very expensive habit. I buy a lot of soda and $1 here, $3 there really starts to add up after awhile.

It’s all about progress not perfection. I’m going to do the best I can but I am very aware that old habits can take time to break.
