30 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food

Finding ways to soothe yourself without food is a really important part of healing.

I’m realizing more and more that a significant part of healing my binge eating disorder can be as simple as working towards changing my old unhealthy habits. If my old way is to eat junk food when I’m stressed, bored, lonely, anxious, etc. Then what can I do to keep myself occupied and try and let the urge to binge pass and get myself back on track?

The following list has some idea prompts to help move your focus away from food. Each time you can avoid a binge is a huge success and moves you more towards wellness and developing new, healthy ways of living.

  1. Take a bath or shower and relax in the warm water
  2. Take a walk
  3. Spend time in nature such as sitting in your backyard or going to a local park or lake.
  4. Read a favorite magazine
  5. Read a favorite book
  6. Listen to music
  7. Play a computer game
  8. Watch a funny movie or tv show
  9. Take a nap
  10. Meditate
  11. Yard work such as gardening, mowing, weeding , picking flowers or raking leaves
  12. Take up an artistic hobby such as knitting, scrapbooking, crocheting, painting, drawing, ceramics, etc.
  13. Update your social media
  14. Write a blog post
  15. Call a friend or family member
  16. Write an email to a friend or family member
  17. Pray and thank God for the blessings in your life
  18. Clean the house
  19. Clean your desk
  20. Play with your cat or dog
  21. Dance around the house
  22. Do a fun recreational sport, such as playing basketball or soccer at the local park
  23. Workout to a dvd
  24. Go to the gym
  25. Wash your car
  26. Take a bike ride
  27. Volunteer to help others
  28. Drink some water
  29. Make a cup of tea
  30. Meet with a supportive friend to chat
